Set Up Password to WinRAR Files

Preventing others from seeing the content in your files is a major challenge. So you explore ways to hide these files. Now no need to worry as the simple trick that I present in this blog post will replace many of your concerns in a single step.

WinRAR provides the facility to setup a password to your files.

1. Right click on a file for which you want to set password.

2. Choose “Add to archive..”

3. Now in the pop up window “Archive name and parameters”, go to the “Advanced” tab.

4. Option for setting password can be seen.

5. Now click on “Set Password”. A window “Archiving with password” will show up where you can give the password.

6. There are two checkboxs: “Show Password” and “Encrypt file names”.

7. The first one if checked will show what you enter in the Enter password field. If not, you have to reenter the password for verification.

8. There is yet another option for setting global or default password if you don’t want to set password every time you want to secure your files.

9. For setting default password, open WinRAR application and in the File Menu, choose “Set default password”. The rest is same as explained in step 7.

That done. Now when ever you try to open the rar file created by above process, a dialogue box with please enter your password will appear. So until and unless you provide exact password, you can’t open your own files and there is no way to recover your files when you forget passwords. So make sure that you use a safe password storage.
