Continuing the GK part from last post on the list of Indian State CM and Governors, here is another one coming up on Nobel Prize. First of all we see some basic questions.

1. In how many categories is the Nobel Prize awarded?

-The Nobel Prize will be awarded for the following six categories.

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Physiology or  Medicine
• Literature
• Peace
• Economics

2. When was the first ever Nobel Prize awarded in?

- It was in 1901.

3. When was Economics included into Nobel Prize list ?

-  Though established in 1968, the first award was given in 1969 to Jan Tinbergen.

4. Who is the first recipient of Noble Prize in Mathematics ?

- Obviously none. Because, there is no Noble Prize allotted under this category.

5. How many people are allowed to share a Nobel Prize ?

-A maximum of three members and  two different works can share a Nobel Prize in each category.

2009 Nobel Prize Winners:

Physics :

Charles K. Kao from China (for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication).

Willard S. Boyle, George E. Smith from USA (for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit – the CCD sensor).

Chemistry :

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan* from UK, Thomas A. Steitz from USA, Ada E. Yonath from Israel (for studies of the structure and function of the ribosom ).

Medicine :

Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider, Jack W. Szostak ( for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase ). All these three are from USA.

Literature :

Herta Müller from Germany ( for the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed ).

Peace :

Barack Obama** from USA ( for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples ).

Economics :

Elinor Ostrom for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons and Oliver E. Williamson for his analysis of economic governance, especially the boundaries of the firm. Both the prize winners are from USA.

* Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is the 7th Indian Origin to win Nobel Prize.

**Presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize are Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Barack Obama. These three were the sitting Presidents who recieved Nobel Prizes.
